At New Lebanon Homeschool Guild, we desire that our program be an affordable, quality resource that enhances each family’s homeschooling experience. We recognize the parents as being solely responsible for overseeing their children’s education. While the classes can provide a framework for enrichment, the parent remains responsible for meeting the requirements of the North Carolina Division of Non-Public Education. Our year for NLHG consists of two 14 week semesters – fall and spring—in a traditional yearlong schedule. Chapel will be held at 9:00am. Classes will begin at 9:30a.m., 10:30a.m. At 11:30a.m., we will break for lunch and then classes resume again at 12p.m. and 1p.m. NLHG is not a school, we do not offer counseling, after-school care, official transcripts, standardized testing, graduation ceremonies, etc. As the homeschooling entity registered with the state, you are required to provide these services should your children require them. Parents are welcome to stay on campus, observing their children’s classes, volunteering, or just hanging out with friends in the game room or fellowship hall by the lovely coffee bar area. We want this to be your favorite day of the week – a place where you can find resources to help your kids and friends to fill your heart! We ask that you enroll students who are respectful, well-behaved, and able to follow the NLHG guidelines. While we do believe in grace we also will not hesitate to uphold the integrity of our program by dismissing students who cannot comply. Our staff will not spend copious amounts of time dealing with these or any other issues. Please consider these matters seriously before enrolling your student. In the unusual event that your student cannot cooperate with our policies, and therefore must be put on probation, suspended or expelled from the program, no refunds will be given.
NLHG Questions and Answers What's in store for my Thursday? Kids can choose from multiple academic and elective classes to fill up from 1- 4 class hours. If a student does not have a class every period, they must be respectful of others using the study hall and be with their parent or under the care of the monitor. Students that are dropped-off must stay in the fellowship hall until it is time to go to their class. The monitor will be wearing a lanyard so they will be easy to identify. THE FELLOWSHIP HALL IS FOR STUDY HALL AND QUIET CONVERSATION You know your child best, and if they are unable to study or talk quietly in the fellowship hall, then you must stay and monitor them yourself. Parents are welcome to stay on campus, observing their children’s classes, volunteering, or just hanging out with other parents in the fellowship hall by the lovely coffee bar area. What will I do with my preschooler? You may sign up preschool-age siblings of students enrolled in New Lebanon Homeschool Guild for classes as listed in our course descriptions, or you may supervise them yourself in the nursery. The nursery offers play space, rocking chairs, and cribs. A classroom will be available as a nursing room.
What's my commitment? Parents are encouraged to stay on campus, but are not required to stay. If your child remains on campus without you they must be enrolled in a class every period or in the fellowship hall studying or conversing quietly with friends. They are not allowed in the game room, gym or outside without a teacher or a parent. You know your child best, and if they are unable to study or talk quietly in the fellowship hall, then you must stay and monitor them yourself. The game room, gym, and gaga ball pit areas are only available to students who are with a parent and teachers may bring their class into these areas if they are done with their lesson for the day. Both teachers and parents must monitor their students/children while in these areas and follow the rules of the area. For academic classes, it is imperative that you work with your children on assignments during the week (one hour per week is NOT enough time to cover any subject). You are still the teacher – our goal is to enrich what you are teaching at home – but we do ask that you make every effort to bring your children to their classes and to keep up with any work assigned. In addition, we ask that your child commit to participating in their classes for each semester that they enrolled. If they are not willing to participate in their classes, they must leave the class and sit quietly in the fellowship hall with you.
What does the registration fee cover? The registration fees cover background checks on teachers, facility costs, compensate substitutes, and pay for our website.
General Facility Policies: 1. Children must either be in a class, or with a parent in the game room, outside, gym or seated in the fellowship hall studying or engaged in quiet conversation. 2. Please clean up after yourself in the classroom, fellowship hall, and the bathroom. 3. The Sanctuary is off limits and upstairs classes must enter and exit through the stairs that connect to the fellowship hall. There will be signs posted as a reminder. 4. Children are allowed to sit in the fellowship hall and eat with their friends during lunch. Absolutely no running and horseplay will be allowed in the fellowship hall. They can play outside with a parent, once they are done eating and have cleaned up after themselves. 5. The stage is off limits for eating or playing at all times. 6. There is a nursery available for preschool children with a parent and mothers with babies. 7. Only currently enrolled NLHG students and families may be present on campus on Thursday. High school cannot invite their outside friends to visit at lunch or chapel.
General Behavior Guidelines: 1. Please show respect for the teachers, monitors, other adults, and fellow students both in and out of class. This includes coming to class on time and being prepared, as well as speaking in an appropriate manner and participating. 2. Absolutely no teasing or bullying will be tolerated. 3. Absolutely no running or loud noises in the hallways and fellowship hall. We must respect the church staff members, teachers and other students who are working during our classes. Stay in the designated areas only. 4. Please dress modestly on Thursdays and at all NLHG events.
For everyone, this means no see-through tops, no crop tops, and no underwear showing. Shorts must have a 2” inseam or longer.
No one is allowed to wear attire that makes a controversial statement.
5. The board reserves the right to take action for repeated violations of behavior and facility policies up to and including expulsion from the program.
Discipline Procedures: Parents will be notified of/involved in any and all disciplinary measures pertaining to their children. In the event that any of the behavior and facility rules are not upheld by a student, the following steps will be taken:
Warning to Student
The affected volunteer or teacher, discusses the issue directly with the offending student outside the classroom. If the student is open to rectifying/changing behavior then they can be allowed back inside the classroom.
The child is sent out of the classroom to sit in the fellowship hall with their parent/parents or monitor. They are not allowed to come back into the classroom for their class and must remain with a parent until it is time for their next class.
If an offense occurs again, a discussion between the offending student, their parent and the NLHG board is required to discuss the student's probation period (2 weeks). Probation requires that the parent must be at their child’s side at ALL times at the co-op including classes and lunch.
If a student has probation twice in one semester (4 of 14 weeks) then the student will be on probation for the rest of the semester. If it becomes apparent at any point that the probation period is not working and the behavior continues, probation ends in favor of immediate expulsion, as determined by the NLHG board.
Violations where someone’s safety is threatened or endangered is grounds for the NLHG board to immediately terminate your child’s co-op membership and charges being filed with the police.
Attendance Policies: 1. Parents are welcome to sit in on any classes that they choose or in the fellowship hall. We hope you will use Thursdays to participate in your children’s classes and make new friends who will support you in your homeschooling journey. 2.You are responsible for any discipline that involves your child. You may have to sit with your child if there is behavior that disrupts classes. If your child needs to be sent out of a classroom, you must be available to supervise them until the class is over. If your child is sent out of class, they will not be allowed to return to class and must stay with you. 3.Students are not allowed to hang out in any part of the building during class hours except the fellowship hall, gameroom (when open), gym (when open) unless they are with a parent. Students must be in class, or in the fellowship hall with a parent or monitor. Students who want to go to the lounge, gym or outside must be with a parent. 4.Do not bring children that are sick or have tested positive for Covid. If a child has had a fever or has vomited in the last 24 hours or has symptoms such as a severely runny nose or cough, please stay home! In the case of a positive Covid test or potential exposure, please quarantine for 10 days (up to 2 co-op days) depending on when the test or exposure took place. 5.All students must remain on campus until their last class is over unless they are leaving with a parent. Teens who drive themselves will not be allowed to leave and return by themselves or with anyone other than a parent during the class day. Check-In and Security Policies: 1.The ONLY entrance and exit we are allowed to use is through the glass doors in the fellowship hall. Look for the portico, and you’ll be in the right place! DO NOT use any other door in the church unless it’s an emergency, and DO NOT open the door to anyone. 2.The lobby will be open at 8:15 for those who are leading chapel services and 8:45 for all others. Please do not arrive before that, nor send your children to class more than 5 minutes early.
Communication Policies: 1.If you find that you have a conflict with another parent, a teacher, or a member of our leadership team, please follow the Biblical guidelines from Matthew 18, in which Jesus asks us to go directly to the person involved first before talking to anyone else. If the problem is still not resolved, please bring it to the board’s attention. It is our desire to handle all conflicts with grace and love. 2.We encourage your feedback on how we can improve NLHG. At the end of each semester, you will have the opportunity to complete a brief survey about your experience at New Lebanon Homeschool Guild.
Volunteer Duty Details: We have two monitor positions that need to be filled each Thursday to ensure things run as smoothly as possible. NLHG needs to ensure that the students stay safe and where they belong in the building as a courtesy to the church staff, the facility, teachers and other students. Upstairs Hall Monitor- We need a parent to stand upstairs for about 15 minutes between the four class changes. This would require a volunteer for 15 minutes X 5 transitions = 1 hour and 15 minutes total each Thursday. Hall Monitors:
Make sure the students use the correct stairwell.
Make sure students behave in the hallways during the transitions.
Fellowship Hall/ Study Hall Monitor- The fellowship hall is reserved as a study hall for the entire day at NLHG. This parent will ensure that students are being respectful of others in this area by studying, or sitting and talking quietly with their friends. If your child is on campus without you, this is where they will be when they are not enrolled in a class. Students that are dropped off must have the self- control to be able to sit and talk quietly to their neighbor or study and be respectful to the monitor.
Fellowship Hall Rules:
